Default Coloured vs. Clear Boro

I am a newbie to boro and need to know, does coloured boro burn hotter in the flame than clear? The reason I am asking is, my didy glasses are good for soft glass and any glass up to clear boro is what the instructions say and I don't want to hurt my eyes. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks lots - Di

It doesn't burn hotter, it burns brighter.

Thanks Shawnette. So, I guess that means my glasses are not good enough to use on coloured boro. Guess I better go shopping. Take care - Di

Some folks add a set of clips ons, say welders shade 3 or 5 over their diddy glasses. Three is lighter - five is darker.

Thanks Alaska. I am trying to avoid the clip-ons as I find them uncomfortable, but it may be what I wind up doing if I can't come up with a reasonably inexpensive solution.

Air Gas has clip ons for about ten dollars. The other option is to use a diddy shield and then a non clip on set of shade 3/5 glasses.

Have been using a 4 x 6 inch diddy shield with clip ons. The nice part is that they flip up when needed. Would rather flip up than take off.....

My understanding is that it's an accumulative effect on wearing didy's for boro. You can torch some with didy's and boro without hurting your eyes but if you're planning to totally work boro, heavier duty ones are needed.

You only get one set of eyes in this world. Protect them the best that you can.

I agree Sue. I am thinking I am probably going to have to just give in a wear SB3 or SB5 glasses over my regular glasses. I am looking at the suppliers you have mentioned Alaska and Geoffery. I have also written Delphi Glass to ask them if they could have their supplier make me some SB3 lenses to fit in the dididium glasses I already have. I'm also going to check with Phillips to see how much it would cost to have lenses made but being as they are out of US and I am Canadian, I don't think they can do a perscription for me. I just love the ones I have because the perscription portion of the glasses is removable and I can just take that portion into my optometrist whenever my perscription changes and have the lenses changed.

Anyways, that's my dilema and I really appreciate all your experiences and opinions. Thanks - Di

You can always buy a plate of Shade 3, 4 or 5 and make a bench shield. The plates are cheap. Less than $10 for a 4x5.

Thanks Shawnette. That's a great idea. I already have one of those but its for soft glass so I will just get a stronger shade for it. YAY ... problem solved!

You still need the ACE or Didy shade. The welders shade 3 or 5 does not filter out the sodium flare. I use shed 3 welders clipons over my ACE clipons, and those are on a pair of glasses with my bifocal prescription.

Thanks Roy. I will wear my SB and the shield when doing boro. That should work.

Thanks again everyone - Di

Just attach the boro shade without removing the didy glass. That way, you always have the sodium flare blocked on the days you don't feel like wearing your didys.

Also by using flip ups for the shade 3 or 5's when you are working with clear you can flip them up to see the detail. Clear boro does not incandesce much more than 104 clear.
