Default Show me your Boro on 5lpm oxycon and nortel minor

I had a generous gift of some boro samples and clear from Susan of Jackson River Glass to try my hand at boro and I only have an oxycon with 5 lpm and a nortel minor torch.

Some colors come out great and some not so much as I suspect I don't have enough oxygen. I would really love to see other people's beads that they have made with the same set-up as I have. So please post your photos of your boro beads!

Thanks again Susan, it's been fun playing with the glass!

Janet

Check with Nitadee ... I'm pretty sure she is running the same set-up as you and she does lots of boro. She may have some tips ... guidance for you!!

Hi Janet,

Do not run your concentrator at it's maximum 5 LPM.

Turn it down to between 3-4 LPM and the Oxygen purity
will be higher, this will give you a more neutral/oxidizing
flame.

To be honest, I'm not really sure what colors are suppose to come out of the glass I have because I bought a bunch of colored boro "shorts" last year and have just started to play with the boro now. It's all unlabelled so it's a surprise every time I melt something...lol.

Some of mine have come out a "snotty" pale green/khaki color and I don't think it was suppose to...LOL

I'm not a fan of shorts - particularly if they are unlabelled. Boro color needs a lot of ' User information' to be able to work the colors properly. Many Boro colors can look quite similar - after 8 years I always keep my rods labelled for that reason. I suggest getting a hold of some colors which you know are what (and what they are supposed to "do")- at least it will give you an opportunity to see if you are able to work it on your set-up - or not. Welcome to the addiction........

also, you can add a holding tank to your torch/oxycon system.
it won't increase the psi, but if you have an 11gal holding tank and run your oxycon for a few extra minutes to fill the tank before torching...well then you've got all that reserve for when you need more oxy!!

i really think this is the answer to minor burners and boro (well to be fair i've got the mega minor)...i'll try and post some pics today of the spoons (pipes) i've made with this setup.

Janet,

Don't worry about a holding tank.

A holding tank will have no effect with a 5 lpm concentrator as it would
never build any reserve at 5 psi.

It would be a complete waste of your time and money.

actually, turned on sufficiently early you would have a reserve to draw off of.
agreed that with a 5lpm machine, the gain wouldn't be spectacular but with a parts list of $40 or less, i figured i'd chime in.

even though Role for some reason is just on a personal crusade to negate every post i make. childish at best. most likely cause....butthurt over something.

Once again, you are wrong.

It's not the LPM it is the PSI that would make the
tank ineffective.

The 5 psi concentrator has to run full open at the torch
valve to get working pressure, the tank would only provide
about one minute of increased flow if she stressed her
concentrator by allowing a full 5 psi to build in the tank.

The trade off is not worth it, the life of her concentrator
will go down for a 1 minute in 10 increased flow.

Janet is on a limited budget.
She does not have an extra $40.00 to waste and I am
certain she wants her concentrator to last as long as
possible.

gotcha. didn't realize that it would only be that small of a gain.
