Skutt Kiln Problems
I have the Skutt bead kiln - GM10F I believe. I have created programs for annealing my beads, and for the past week the kiln takes a long time to get up to temperature (stops, looses heat, starts again). Once up to temperature (960) it will drop down as much as 100 degrees, then kick back in and overshoot a little. It does all of the timed parts correctly, just seems to be having trouble with the temperature part. I did look at the heating elements and they all seemed to be ok. Anyone tell me what this sounds like?

Next step is to check the location of and the condition of the temperature probe. They do not last forever. Look for position change, too far in or out, cracks in the tip area. or loose connections where the red & yellow wires connect.

How far into the kiln does the thermocouple extend?
Have you unplugged and plugged in the kiln?
Does the controller have an auto tune? Have you run it?

Do you have the one with the bead door? It can loose heat if you don't keep it stuffed
with the fiber blanket stuff. Mine did.

Thanks everyone. I'll check the position of the thermocouple. As far as I know it doesn't have an auto tune. Yes it has the bead door. Maybe it's time to replace it.

They are very good to get information from and Skutt Kilns are easy to replace
parts on. The coils can get a very tiny break and you have to look very carefully to find one.Happened to my big ceramic one and they sent the part
to fix it.

Something is making intermediate contact... like where the wire connects to the elements. There will be a sheet metal cover on the back where the pigtails of the elements come thru the wall of the kiln and attach to the wires coming from the controller. Those connections are prone to coming loose cause they heat and cool and heat and cool and that is hard on the connecters. Check those and if they are tight you need to check the other places where your wire connects... like where it connects to the controller. But, somewhere there is a connection thats heating up and moving a little and causing a disconnect and then when it cools it touches again.
Thats my theory.

BTW... be sure you unplug it before you check those.
