Default Bead sizes/classifications?

Ok, you guys and gals have had a little break from dumb newbie questions, so I figured I would add one for ya.

I did search a bit, one of the problems of searching when you are new is you don't know what the call what you are searching for.

Is there a chart with pictures that gives the description of a particular bead? i.e. round, oval, lentil, etc.

Second. What are the sizes that are acceptable. Or does it matter. I know focals are larger, but is there a set size for the use of the others.

After typing it seems this is such a dumb question; I just curious about what you feel. I measured some of the beads I have been making and they seem to be over 5mm.
Thank you.
Cher

i'm not totally sure what you mean by acceptable. do you mean for use in jewelry? or a specific technique? you can make beads whatever size you want! (says the girl who makes 1/4 pound beads, haha!!)

over 5 mm, in thickness?

Cher
I have a book called "The History of Beads" that goes back 100,000 years. There is a chart in it on bead shapes, as well as a timeline chart. It's one of my favorite books.

Here's some info: http://rowenablog.typepad.com/rowena...e-arizona.html

I think you have to decide if you want a usage to dictate the bead, or the bead to dictate the usage. Chicken or egg sort of question.

oh no no no not dumb at all!! as a beadmaker you are totally in control of the beads you make! no regulations on the beads you "have" to be making. if making tiny tiny beads makes you happy, do that. if making enormous beads makes you happy, do that.

An easy way to find what a specific bead shape is called is to browse Zoozii's site:

Cher, I couldn't agree more with any of the previous responses! First, no question is a dumb or stupid question! Trust me, I should know,I ask enough of them. Next, there shouldn't be a size limit to what you want to make. I made a necklace for a friend using 1 1/2 inch hollows, then tapered down to much smaller solid beads.

By the way, Ali wasn't quite telling the truth.....most of her beads start at half a pound

Larry, I LOVE that quote/statement!

In "More Then You Ever Wanted To Know About GLASS BEADMAKING", by James Kervin, Published by GlassWare Studios..

On pages 263-264 there is descriptions and sketches of bead shapes....

Size seems to be up to the whims of bead maker or person ordering any "sets" of beads...

I agree with everyone else's comments; it's pretty much up to the maker.

If you want to see what others do, check out various artists on Etsy. Most artists give bead sizes, and you'll see what others use to make bracelets, necklaces, focals, etc. You'll also see how people vary sizes so the the weight of an item is not excessive and difficult to wear.

You will find that people around here are very generous with their advice, assistance and opinions. Ask away and enjoy making beads.

Well you have everything from pencil eraser sized spacer beads to Miss Ali's kayak anchors, and everything in between. If it makes you happy to make it, who cares!

And don't forget...not every bead needs to be worn!
Some are just sitting around on my shelves. (like the presh-us)
