July pin-up ... did you see the nice glass on that?
OK, so I'm starting another monthly work thread. I dunno if people are too busy, on holidays or too timid to start one (if you're shy about your work, don't be, we all love to see what you're making and working on !!!!), so, sorry, it's 11 days into the month and I got a bit impatient about someone else starting a thread.
Here goes. We made this one to enter into a juried exhibition, my partner Laurie cast a base with some beautiful detailed work on it (she specialises in cast and pate de verre work), the cover is a found object taxidermy bell and the lampworked figures are mine. We got selected to take part in the exhibition!! yay!
“Belladonna and the Mandragora”
Based on medieval botanical, medical and alchemical imagery, we have attempted to recapture a kind of mystery which is almost lost to this modern world of science. In our quest for knowledge we imagine that we know far more than we actually do and often forget to look at the world with the kind of child-like wonder a cabinet of curiosities can evoke.
hope you like it
cheers
Chris

hi,
thanks for all the comments, reactions like that makes it all worthwhile, even though we're not really making any money out of our glass at the moment. It's hard to stay afloat because the pool of collectors and glass aficionados in Australia is minute compared to the States. The culture of purchasing art is a lot less developed in Australia in comparison to the USA and Europe, as well. A really big job we'd been doing for the auto industry fizzled out for us when the economy came crashing down, I didn't think this whole economy thing was going to affect us too badly, but we all know what happened to the car-industry. We've been trying to make up for this by creating a lot of very commercial work like perfume bottles and pendants ... I even filled a briefcase with marbles recently (first time ever in 20 years of glassmaking that I've ever made so many mibs in one stretch ... I have made them in the past in dribs and drabs). The upside to the story is that once the economy comes back and people start buying again, we will have so much more work out there in so many more galleries for them to buy. And hopefully our industry job will come back again, too Until then, we're doing it tough like a lot of other people out there.
Getting this piece accepted into the exhibition was a real validation and picker-upper at a time when things were starting to look a bit grim (we've recently talked about having to give up the studio we're currently in and downsizing to be able to weather this whole mess). Your support and comments help a heck of a lot, so once again,
thank you very much!
cheers
Chris

Beautiful work!!
Beautiful work! It is nice to see the mixture of the patte de verre work with the lampworked figures. I really enjoy the quality of your work, and hope to see more as time goes by. NICE!

hi and thanks again, I want to see your glass, too!
that bunny is killer, Chris! looks like you're having fun with the glowstix
Marcel, I really like your figures, too, they remind me a little of some small ceramic figures my mum got in Spain when we were there back in the 70s (we visited Salvador Dali at his house there in Catalonia). You have a really nice sense for shapes.

Some bits and pieces I've been putting together for the gathering, I'd love some feedback on them...

GORGEOUS WORK!
I made some dragonflies and other critters this week, with all the stress at home I figured one bead at a time was the way to go....lol
I love the base color on this one...its a shiney silky green...I have no idea what it is, it was in a box of shorts ...any ideas?

It looks like the old moss 21. I know we have had some in our bags of shorts we sell at Trev's Glass. I made Leaves out of some of Trev's stash (As they can't make it anymore) and he didn't appreciate me using it LOL How'd I know he'd notice he has 30 lbs!

thank you !
figures it would be something they dont make anymore..lol if the other green pearl is anything like it its goin on my shoppin list...lol
Im pretty sure the base of the first one is magic mirror...lots of frit on top
most the time I just grab glass and play...i do need to pay more attention so when something turns out cool i know how i did it...lol but the times i do try to duplicate something it comes out of the kiln looking totally different.. but i guess thats what makes boro so much fun!
time to go get my " Double Naughty Monkey " from the coffee shop and get to work .... cant start a day without caffine

I know I've only been doing glass for only 2 weeks now, (I'm taking a class, our 3rd meeting is Monday, and he's going to show us how to do implosions...) but I wanted to share my chicken pendant! I LOVE working with Boro. My friend let me play with her HH and I went outside and melted what I now know was soft glass, and it snap and crackled at me and I put it away and signed up for this class! At first I was dismayed that it was Boro, because I was intimidated by it, but wow, it's cool. I've gone in a few times on my own, and I play with glass for HOURS!
