Hot head users please heeeelllp!
There was a thread a while back about MAPP gas being discontinued. I teach a class on a hot head. I haven't taught in a while, but may start up again. So what gas are all you hot head people using? I heard something about Map-pro. Or, is it possible the discontinuation of MAPP gas was just a rumor? Because after all that, I still see it at Home Depot.
-Confused :/~

MAPP gas
I use MAPP gas and hate it. I'm upgrading to an adult torch (LOL). MAPP gas has already been discontinued. The replacement is MAPP Pro which I haven't tried - instead I went everywhere and bought as much MAPP gas as I could find until I get the new torch and I'm set up. I heard the reason they discontinued it is because of a shortage of fuel and the GOVT wouldn't let them have anymore to make MAPP gas. The new verison MAPP Pro - I am told - does not burn as hot. I spoke to the people that were supplying MAPP Gas and this is what I was told.

First off.... MAPP is mixture of methyl acetylene, propane, and propadiene, plus various other very common gasses... So I doubt discontinuing production was due to a availability issue...

Map-Pro the "so called" MAPP replacement is actually Propylene.... Which is a "brazing fuel" and has similar burn characteristics as Propane, and the old MAPP.... Temperature is about the same or slightly hotter than propane....
Any store that has MAPP on shelf probably has old stock.... MAP-PRO cylinders are same color as MAPP and label is very similar... Look closely at label....
Lots of information in this thread...

I've taught beginner classes on Mapp-Pro and it was fine - perhaps a bit hotter than MAPP.

Propane.
(I still don't get what the huge deal is with MAPP...I mean, a few degrees of temperature hotter, but like $5 a bottle more expensive on the little bottles...soooo not worth it to me!)

Never tried the 1# propane containers - but I love the heck out of the bulk tanks. The only time I use a smaller tank is when I'm teaching.

I know--I my bbq tank too. But whenever I look @ the 1# tanks & the pricing, it amazes me that people will pay that much more for the mapp/mapp pro vs. either the propane "torch tanks" or the propane "camping" tanks (shorter, fatter, still 1#)~

I have been using the small propane tanks for my hothead. I didn't see the point of paying all that extra money and it seems to be working just fine. I want to switch to a bbq tank set up but theres a back and forth as to whether or not it is safe so i think i will hold off on bulk tanks until I am ready to upgrade my torch. Better to be safe than sorry
