Oh no, I don't really want to move stuff...
I was just reading my kiln manual again and it says that the kiln needs to be at least 12" away from the sheetrock wall! That means I have to rearrange everything!

Put a sheet of concrete backer board between kiln and wall as a "heat shield"...

That's what I do with my big kiln, just prop a sheet of cement board up leaving a couple inches of air space between the wall and the board. I also put the cement board under all my kilns, works great.

Thank you Dale and Bonnie! You saved me from so much work. I'll go look for some cement board today. Whew!

Heat shielding
I used a sheet of aluminum covered with ceramic tile. Looks a little better and stays a lot cleaner vs the cement board.

Just a simple sheet of 20 ga. sheet metal spaced an inch away from the wall will work just as well. Leave an inch of space at the bottom to promote natural air flow.

Thanks everyone for your advice. I have decided to move the kiln anyway. It's only a few inches from the sheetrock, and there is a plug-in about a foot away. So I'm thinking of positioning it right behind me, instead of beside me. Hope that works

Mine's behind me. I have a roll-around type chair that swivels and having it behind me gives me more room on my work bench for glass.
