HELP--Etched Beads have white scum on them
I used a white etching cream on amber beads & CANNOT get the white scum off them. I've brushed them with an old toothbrush, soaked them in vinegar & they still have white scum on them. How do I fix that?? Thanks for any suggestions!

Try some dish soap and hot water with a scrub brush.

After you etch them, drop them in some milk for a bit, right away.

Soak them in Washing Soda (get it at the grocery), then rinse thoroughly in clear water. There's an article on etching in the last issue of The Glass Bead that explains how to best manage etched beads.

Best thing to do is ditch the cream. The Etch-All liquid is best. I've been where you are and had no lunch removing the film in it's entirety.

I've always put mine in a both of baking soda & water after etching...stops the etching process and I don't get the white scum...a little cleaning with a brush with beads that have some dimension to them.

I like to rub a tiny bit of beeswax on the beads after etch, it still shows a nice matte finish and allows the inner bead colors to come thru a bit better.

Baking soda works reasonably well, washing soda is better from a chemistry standpoint. Creme or liquid, the active ingredient is the same. Creme just has a bunch of sugar to thicken it. You still need to neutralize the acid.

I've used Renaissance wax too on the inside of big rings and sliders.

I use Palmolive Oxy, with baking soda in warm water and give them a bubble bath but that's with liquid.
