Ever do any infrared photography?
I really would like to, anyone have any pics?
I'm not sure if I can use a filter or if I have to use my Minolta and film. I noticed that the film costs the same as or more than, the filter.

I did, eons ago in college! lol! Sorry no pix to show (they are all probably still in Hawaii at my mom's if she hasn't thrown them all out!) but if memory serves, the developing schedule is different from regular film . . . we did all our own developing back then too. You may want to check into if that is so and what service bureau can process your film for you.
The result is definitely worth it!

My friend Victoria Pittman does this! Check out her blog at http://www.victoiriapittman.blogspot.com/. She has a special category for her infrared photos. xiola

You can do it with digital, too. Use a red filter and your b&w setting.

I am curious to see how the digital ones compare . . . since IR film is based on thermal imaging.

I used to do a lot of digital infrared photography. You will need a certain camera like a Sony DSC-707 or a Dimage 7 which they no longer make anymore. I got mine on ebay. The new Sony DSC cameras work because they have night mode. You will also need a Hoya IR infrared lens. If anyone is interested, I wrote a tutorial for a guy who purchased my Dimage 7 on post processing of infrared images. I would be happy to send it to anyone who wants to do some infrared. It's a fun medium to explore.
Here is one of my favorite images I took back in 2004:

This is what I'm talking about! Way cool. So I can't use my Nikon? That's no good, I just spent a lot of money for it.

I use to do it! I did it the old fashion film way and the photos were always lovely and amazing the graniness and texture and glowing nature of them are what I loved. All my stuff from school is packed away....I wish I had some scanned somewhere Icould share. I really loved it. The film is rather hard to find though.
I would be very interested in how to go about doing the digital version. I think it would be so amazing to do that again!

You can do it with any digital camera. From memory, you need to get a cheap used body, because you take it apart and remove a light screen thingy. (yes, technical term). That makes the digital sensor more sensitive, but more noisy. Then you need to be careful with light leaks, and maybe a red filter?
Ugh, I can't really remember, a friend explained it to me a week ago or so. Key point is that it can be done with any digital camera that you're willing to risk by taking apart. I'll ask the friend for links, but it will probably be a couple days before I hear back. But you don't want to use your nice camera, because you make it much much noisier in the process of converting.

Thanks for the info everyone.

I had bookmarked this site previously due to a conversation between my husband and I. I used to play with IR with film and we were discussing the digial possibilities. I thought I had another site, but I can't seem to find it.

When I take a pix with a camera, I usually use a video camera that also takes stills. The one I use now has a switch at the top for if you want to take an IR pix. I haven't really used it, but I do know that in dark light, when you flip it over, you can take pix of stuff that is not too far away from the camera. It's a Sony Video Camera and I just checked - the button calls it Nightshot Plus. I guess I'll have to play with it more. I never really gave it any thought. It is a digital camera and Google says it is IR. If I get anything worth showing you, I'll post it here.

OK, I just had to go try it and the first thing I could think of was to take a pix of one of my cockatiels. Here is Houdini in the sunlight as pictured on my frit reference page
I went into the living room and turned of all the lights and TV so it was pitch black in there. I flipped the switch and here is a thumbnail of the pix I just took. Click on either thumbnail to see it full sized.
Wow! One interesting thing to note though is that birds do not have an iris - or at least it doesn't show - not sure which it is. The large pix has not been edited in any way - except to change the name. So Cool!

I use both Photoshop and Paint Shop Pro (X and X2). In Paint Shop Pro it is possible to apply a "Photo Effect" of "Infared Film". You can take any conventionally taken photo and change it so it looks as if it had been taken with a infared set up.
I haven't discovered the same thing in Photoshop.

I'm planning to buy a IR filter when I go home on July, cause its way cheaper there. I can't wait to do IR photos.

Ok So I went and found an infrared filter today. They are VERY VERY incredibly DARK! Just so you dont freak out when you find it. My camera isnt suppose to take screw on filters but I get it to work ok mine takes a 49mm but most really vary from like 15-20mm on up pretty far.
Also these filters are NOT cheap. Well good ones are definately not cheap. I really like hoya filters they are very good quality. But the infared one is close to $38 at my local camera shop. I really shouldnt have spent it but you know I was really curious how well this would work.
I edited the image in photoshop, I cropped it, adjusted the contrast, and did a couple rounds of sharpen on it. Thats it.
Tips.
MUST be a sunny day can be partly sunny but cannot I REPEAT cannot be overcast complete cloud cover it just doesnt work well well its complete cloud cover I did some tests today and it just now got sunny out so I went out and did my tests again and it works with my camera with NO modifications! WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
Hints though shoot on manual so you can choose your own ISO, Aperture, and shooting speed. I shot at really fast ISO 3200-6400, then shutter of 15-20 and aperture around 3.5 I hand held the camera for the sample picture. So its not the best and its just shooting out my front door The only direction where I could get a good variety from clouds, to trees with fallen leaves to a evergreen tree with visible foliage. I shot in B&W mode.
Hope this helps you guys! Again I have a Fuji Finepix s2000hd this camera is under $300 and his packs ALOT of punch. Its amazing. It can shoot in incredibly low light....I really really love it. If I set up a tripod and shot on a slower film speed I think it would loook much much better. My camera shoots up to 10megapixels per inch

Yes, that's what I want to do! I tried using some tutorials on how to adjust photos in Photoshop to make them look like infrared, but they don't really look like infrared.
Ok, I will try the filter. I supposed I could go to the camera store on a sunny day and try it on my camera take photo out the door and see if it looks right.
That's great, I'm so glad you posted it.

Here is the second test I just did
I shot this at ISO 200 and incredibly slow like 3-4seconds I think at 3.5aperture. You can see the difference in the image. The one has a bit more interference/jitter than this one. I used a tripod for this since it was such a long exposure.

I keep going back to this fellows site to look at his infrared photos. If you scroll down you can read how he does it using the Nikon D70 and filters
