Akihiro Okama is one of Japan’s finest glass artist and is known for his intricate tonbodama (beads) and murrinis, and more recently known for his borosilicate marbles, pendants, and paperweights.
Akihiro Okama was born in 1970 in Nara, Japan. He started to learn bead making from his father Yasuhiro in 1996. That same year, he established Glass Studio Hand to create his own style of glass art. In 2002
Akihiro’s glass bead was presented to the Imperial Highness of Takamadomiya. Akihiro studied under artists that include Loren Stump, Lucio Bubacco, John Kobuki, Josh Sable, and Chris Buzzini. Akihiro’s glass
career initially focused on Satake glass to create tonbodama, but after much exploration and influence from around the world, he added borosilicate glass to his repertoire and creates spectacular glass marbles and paperweights.
Akihiro’s work is part of the collection at the Corning Glass Museum and Kobe Lampwork Glass Museum. He has been invited to demonstrate and teach at many glass art conferences around the world. Akihiro teaches internationally and continues to create his spectacular glass art at his studio in Nara, Japan.
