Why are my torches humming?
I bought a Pirahna a couple of weeks ago. Ever since I moved both the Pirhana and my Minor hum. The only thing that is different is I put quick releases on them. I never had my Minor hum in 3 years.

Mine hum every once in a while if I've fiddled with the pressures. Not sure what it is, but it sure sounds weird. I know somebody here has an answer.

It could be your regulator, Kevan.

Our delta started humming or squeaking once. Turns out it just was begging for a cleaning. It was about 2 years of use tho before it got that dirty tho.
one of the ports got so cloged it started making the inner tube act like a reid and make the noise.
My other torches will mainly only make weird nosies if there is moisture in the lines or if some one messes with my pressure.

This Pirahna is brand new. I went out and bought a new regulator. Hums exactly the same, no difference.
Does anyone have a link to the manufacturer?

I really have no idea but since it didn't start until you attached the quick releases then I would start with that and go from there. Maybe contact the seller and see if the connects can a hum. I can't see the torches humming because of the regulator unless your gas pressure is WAY up there. That happened to me once when my regulator bit the dust. Not pretty. Then again, I really don't know and am just spouting off some ideas.

Definitely makes the quick releases look suspicious IMO.

It doesn't do it on the Cheetah though.
I wish Jed was still working at Frantz. He's the torch guy.
Thanks for the imput.

The quick connects can make a torch humm like that. What pressures do you have your oxy and propane set at? If the pressures are set fairly low, it will make the check valves in the connects vibrate and it makes the torch humm. I had that problem with a torch a while back and when I took the connects off it stopped again. After that I called the manufacturer of the connects and they explained to me about the check valves.

The only time mine ever hummed (very tunelessly I might add) was when my oxygen was running low. I've got QD's on all the torches and once the oxy pressure started dropping at the end of a tank, the humming started - which fits in with "fiddling with pressures" I guess.

I wounder if the sound could be stopped by moving the quick releases futher down the line and away from the torch? Like adding a 6 foot pig tail or some thing. So you'll have like a 6 feet of hose going to the torch when its disconected,

That would probably work. The pig-tails I had on mine were about 12".

I'm tanked. I don't mean I'm drunk, I'm on tanked oxygen.
I emailed Jed at Double Helix who was the expert torch guy at Frantz and he said to adjust the pressure. I did that - no difference.
He thought maybe there is something wrong with it and I should take it back to Frantz. I didn't buy it there, I bought it on line.
Idiot.

simple solution?
Do you have torch mounted graphite pads on there? It may be coming loose and the slight vibrations causing the hum. I know this sounds crazy but it may be worth a try.

I was at a silversmithing course last week, and the instructor had a Smith Little Torch with disposable propane and oxygen tanks...all of a sudden his torch started to hum with a high pitched sound (kind of like a whistle). He didn't seem to know why, and it hadn't happened before in the 8 years he's been using it. Hmmm.
