Default 96 Coe powders: when?

I have recently started using 96 Coe glass and love it! As I research these threads, I have learned so much from you. I notice that some of you appear to use 96 Coe lampworking cane, and some use 96 Coe powdered glass. (I noticed especially in the thread for the well-loved discontinued and rare Z-99, many of you used the powder). Could you give me some examples of when you use each form, and tell me what difference it makes in the surface appearance of the bead?

Thank you! Gayl
