A Gorgeous dark metallic teal color.

Is this Unobtainium? And it if it is Unobtainium, how do I work it to get the more steal grey color?

That looks like unobtanium. You may be thinking 'obtanium' (NS-118)

I think the picture is incorrect or taken in bad light. Unobtanium kind of stays the same color. Try layering it thinly over a dark color, that may get you what you need.

That's what mine looks like.

PS. I love layering cobalt over Unobtanium. It's a nice sparkly, festive blue. Great for holiday stuff!

Boro color is rarely that consistent. It can change based on a lot of factors. The stock pictures are just examples. Experiment with it a bit and you may get close to the pic.

for what it's worth.....unobtanium comes in different shades often. some is darker, and some is like sparkly blue spruce. it's sort of out of distributor's hands. i've opened 5 lb, factory bundles, that had different shades in it. It's all nice though, is the thing to remember. it's a great color.

Looks like you got a nice batch there! I've never gotten Unobtanium as dark as that stock photo. I use it a lot in beads as a base under other colors.
If you need a steel gray you might try steel wool, it's very sparkly.

Be aware that it MUST be worked in a heavily oxidizing atmosphere or it will not be happy encased. For me this has been a very finicky color.

My experience is it HATES to be encased and cracks inside no matter what I do, which is a shame cuz I love this color.

I make encased stringers from it all of the time. I've never had an issue. I guess I'm lucky!

Give lochness a try it's grey. NS's unobt. photo is way off, I've never had any that color.
It's always a blue color.

Sue
I layer it over clear with other colors in canes, and that does a good job of preventing cracking for me.

Have not had any cracking issue with NS-104. Works well when mixing with other NS colors and clear. It is usually used in a bead to provide a bit of sparkle much like NS Steel Wool.

It is a darker blue and seen no color change in the 18 or so rods pictured. The issue with PhotoShop is what color would one like to see!!! A gray card was used to balance out to neutral gray, etc. Then comes how much saturation is desired, etc.....

A good example of color variation is the crayola colors, look at a crayola red made in summer time vs winter. I could be full of it, but I am thinking general temp and other atmospheric conditions could play a role in this, but then again it could just be the chemistry (metals and so fourth) behind runs of various colors at any given time. I have not gone so far as to ensure a said shade was made in a certain time of year, and then checked the following year all while looking at the weather patterns of both to see if the year before was similar enough to make the comparison accurate (some years its colder, others warmer etc). In any case, sometimes it is almost kinda nice to have some slightly different shades of "the same" color. Makes building a pallet that much more dynamic.

I have been intending to go down to Tigard and check out NS (as I seem to pass within a few blocks on the bus all the time), only been over to Glass Alchemy a few times really and in all honesty should go dig through their odds again soon ;D

Ages ago when I worked for Bullseye I remember the chemist telling me that getting colors to come out the same was really, really tricky because even humidity affected the batch, not to mention a million other variables.

In my mind, batchmasters are like wizards to get the colors anywhere close to consistent!

I get there being some variation...really I do. They just cant make the exact same thing every single time to much to it.

but I really dont get...the "acceptable" variation not even being the same color group. 0o

All the Unobtainium I've bought has been kind of a steel gray. I think the pic on the website is just off.

But what is a 'steel gray'?

I've worked a lot of steel and I've seen colors in it from bright chrome like silvers to dark dirty sooty gray-blacks.

Customarily, in terms of artistic color, it's a sort of blue-gray.

Here's a link to Pantone steel gray: http://www.pantone.com/pages/pantone...aspx?c_id=4009

And bluesteel: http://www.pantone.com/pages/pantone...aspx?c_id=4055

IME Unobtainium is usually somewhere between those hues.
