Default How to shut off a duct when not in use?

What's the name for a thing I can use to shut off my lampwork-duct when its not is use? I've just spent thousands insulating the building and making it more air-tight, so i'd appreciate air not leaking in through the lampwork-vent! I was wandering if there existed something that was manually operated, and physically blocked the ducting...? (other than shoving a towel in the duct line!)

No one in the UK really has hvac.. other than commercial premises where the companies won't speak to me.. so i'm struggling to find parts, which isn't helped when i don't know what things are called!

Thanks,
Charli

Try a google search for "duct damper".

It all depends on how 'air tight' you want the system to be when not in use. The typical damper that is used in a home heating system duct work system will not provide a 100% seal.

Here is a firm that make a 99% seal butterfly damper.

I built a 10" blast gate for my make up air duct so that it can be closed off when not in use. I cut a square piece of Plexiglas with a handle in the middle to cover the pipe going into my hood and put rare earth magnets on the corners to keep it in place. These keep everything closed up pretty well. I also put a 'vent closed' sign in front of the torch when I shut down so that I'll remember to remove the cover.

A nother option besides the butter fly damper is a blast gate.

A blast gate is often found in dust collection or homes with centeral vacume. It has sort of a guillotine action that you swing closed manualy when not in use.
Wood shops and welders use them for forced air vents and the like as you can open and close gates for each workstation when not in use.

You should also have a Shutter vent these mount to the outside of the building and articulate closed when not in use. Plastic ones are often used on cloths dryers, I would use steel for lampwork. Most don't seal very well but it helps and keeps animals out of the duckwork.

A galvanized end cap can pushed up inside the duct if the edges are bent in a bit.
