I didnt find my choice on list... I heat them up and attach them to an end of a same color rod, and I just keep torching. I do this every time after torching. If it is shorter than 4 inches, it gets transformed to a long rod! If I run out of color and dont have anything to attach it to... I am in trouble, it messes up my system. I cant stand loose shorts piling up! Yeah, kinda control freak... I sweep my table with a paint brush to make sure there is no little shards. I am helpless...

Hahaa, you are funny!
I just do it, cause I want to find my colors fast, and to know how much I have them, and the biggest reason is, that I dont have yet a proper storage for my glass, so I have to try to make the best out of it, so I actually can work some. It is not always a blessing, Im tellin ya! Sometimes I think I waste so much time with organizing, that I dont have time left to torch!

Sometimes I donate my shorts to the local glass artists society, ISLAGA, so new members can have glass to experiment with.

I use rubber-handled alligator clips I got at home depot and modded a bit with my pliers as short holders. The very tiny <1" long shorts that remain after that go into a jar, and eventually get used to messily mush onto a more organic focal or something like that.

At the end of the day, I take a clear rod and heat it. Then I choose one, two or three colors (depending on their size) and pick them up with a hot clear rod. Swirl onto the mandrel, and you have a marble looking bead - all one of a kind.
To make frit, I will place a coffee cup of cold water directly under the torch. Hold your glass over it and let the hot blobs fall into the water. Strain, dry, and crush further if needed.
If I melt several small pieces together, I almost always put it into the kiln to anneal. I seems to relieve the stress at the joined part, and isn't as shocky.

I melt mine onto another rod also. I use the pieces that break off & make frit out of that.

As a noob pipe maker and po to boot, I buy shorts to obtain colors that I otherwise can"t afford. I'll make stringers, twisties, or even fuse to clear and make a multi colored pokey(polka) dot pipe. As I usually use clear dots anyway to encase the fuming, when the color runs out I just keep dotting. I waste nada. Much thanks to all the people that sell or gift shorts. I, for one, appreciate them.

I have a tray where I keep one of each color (about 2" long) with the label, so that if I have a color I cannot identify it is often in there. Then I attach the others to the end of the same color.

My shorts are in an old silverware tray sorted by color.
Every winter there is a point at which I can no longer open the drawers of my glass storage because of the humidity. Then I've got my shorts waiting to save me.
I tell myself every winter to sand the dang drawers but this is the 6thwinter here . . .

Betsy, try rubbing a candle or a bar of soap on the drawer and rub points on the opening.
It is temporary fix but It could well work for a decade before you need to do it again.

I keep the shorts and use them to make twisties. For the expensive rods I fuse it onto a longer rod which I heat up the slowly and I don't get any shocking. I am too cheap to throw anything away.

I use a lot of stringer so I make my ends into stringer. Or I fuse the 2 rods together
