At the first strike, after the bead is cooled till the glow is gone (put it under the table to make sure), you re-introduce the bead at the tip of the flame to re-heat (putting it back in the hottest part of the flame may cause thermal shock). . . then you may elect to bring it forward to the hotter part of the flame. For subsequent strikes, it depends if how much you let the bead cool, I usually use the normal part of the flame for those steps.
