Marble as a work surface?
Is marble a viable option for a work surface? I'm just setting up my studio and can get a 24" by 24" by 1" with a chip on one corner for next to nothing. I'm also considering granite as well.

I have a marble work surface and love it! It can discolour a bit when really hot glass is laid down on it...but then, my surface is usually covered in glass so I don't notice it so much...

Hi,
The folks in venice have been using marble as marvers for ages, so yup its a great work surface. BUT!!!! I have one warning. make SURE its real marble and not cultured marble, meaning its been put together with epoxy etc , the cheap stuff. Hot glass on the cheap stuff is not pretty... The epoxies melt. Been there done that, got the tshirt. Its also a bit better as a marver anyway if it has a little "tooth" to it

I have a black marble table I work on and just started using it as kind of a huge marver. It works like a charm. I live in Florida and work on my patio so the marble gets warm and warms from the torch and pre heats the glass. Works like a charm.

I once tried a marble slab gifted to me. I got bits of the surface of the slab in my glass. I haven't had any more luck with other marble marver attepmts. How can you tell when you have a crappy piece of stone and a quality piece of marble??????????
Pictures anyone?
Thanks
Alice

I nearly always marver on marble tiles. I like them better than graphite and only use the graphite when I need something with a handle.
