It's a possibility. OTOH, it could have just been the tool had screwed up on the timing and broke a few days BEFORE the warrenty ran out instead of a few days after.

I was only joking, I can't imagine anyone breaking working tool & cheating the store to get another one. What a nice surprise to have one break just before the warranty expired in stead of just after though!

Actually, if it wears out I can see that.
The handles of Sears pruners always used to come off (by themselves, I didn't break them). I would use those until they were blunt and then get new ones (Craftsman lifetime warranty on hand tools).

I've got a pair of pruners I should take back, they are not sharp at all and the lock doesn't work anymore. So hard to remember though. I have a package of apple/chicken sausage that was recalled I do need to return. We got a letter from Sam's telling us to bring it back, that was a new twist. I guess buying with a membership card let then know who had bought it!

Just bought some 1000 grit, but I'm confused on if I will need to change the grit after so many uses, etc., or if I will have a pound less the 1 tablespoon for years & years.

I've been using the same solution (1000 grit in distilled water) for at least a year now without changing it at all although I don't etch a ton of beads. I'm pretty sure I will have my pound of grit until I die.

Well, I came searching, and look what I found!
Just got a 25% coupon for HF, so thought I'd go get me a tumbler, and was searching for the grit and filler to use. Since it looks like we don't need much grit, would anyone be willing to sell me a couple Tbls of the 1000? Drop me a pm with cost and such. Thanks!

1- I recommend you to buy 1 tumbler and just buy an extra barrel to keep them all separate.
2- yes you need to buy certain grit.
Timble gass are expensive but etch glass are better option.

Hello all! I received a Lortone tumbler for Christmas. Some of my lovely LE friends have sent me the grit and plastic filler during our secret santa (thanks!

) so I'm all set to start to try to etch some beads. I've seen mention in this thread and other places of adding dish soap to the mix. Do I need to add dish soap? People mention specifically Dawn or Ivory. Does it need to be one of those or can I throw in a pump of whatever is at my sink today?

I only had Joy, and added a few drops of that (not enough to suds) and it worked fine.

I read somewhere that you can use rice to polish beads in a tumbler. Obviously no water would be added. Has anyone tried it?

Excellent Melody - look forward to seeing your results! I tumble my beads too, rather than etch them!

Regarding the dish soap - you don't need to add that to your grit for tumble etching.

You add the Dawn/soap to stainless steel shot to tumble polish silver and metals.

That's how I understand it, anyway!

I read recently that someone uses sand in her tumbler to etch the beads, and can't find it. If it's you, can you give more details? I'm wondering if it gives a different finish or just easier to get (& cleaner) but similar results.

Gave sand a try with boro beads as an experiment in place of silicon carbide. Nothing happened!! The SC etched the beads perfectly.

I used sand for makani (I think) seeds, that worked more or less OK but they are pretty soft.

It breaks down, so I replace it every so often. I'll have to see if there are photos that I can drag up to show.

Hi Eileen, I am in Australia so probably much quicker from you

I use the 600 on opaques (fast and gives them a nice texture) and the 1500 on transparents, it takes much longer but I get a nicer finish, less cloudy somehow

Eileen, I put in a tablespoon or so of sand, my beads to tumble, extra beads to increase the tumbling action, and fill halfway with water.

Lynda, thanks, I'll try that. I have the double barrel tumbler, so will try to remember to experiment and do some by each method one day to see the difference.
