Default Questions about 104 glass

Long story short, I use mainly BE90, but would like to try 104 glass too. What is the best way to start. I know basicially about getting main colors. But does any of the Vendors have a studio startup package?
I see so many beautiful beads in LE. And wonder about some of the cool rods used on these beads. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you,
Janet C.

You can get some sampler packs - most major manufacturers have one, or many (like transparents, pastels, specials, or all of the colours). CiM puts out colour specific packages (blues, pinks, etc). If you get Effetre, don't mix the opalino or alabastro glasses with the other glasses (20% rule applies).

Thank you Jody for your help. I was wondering about CIM. Never having tried any of these. I am clueless. Thank you again. It's like being a newbie again , as far as 104 glass is concern.
I guess just order and try them out.
Again, Thank you for your time and your help.

The starter package I suggest at the shop I work at is roughly:

3 lbs effetre clear
1 lb ea. effetre black & white
1/4 lb ea CIM hades & peace (use for stringer especially, neither wash out like effetre)
1/4 lb ea light and dark ivory
Effetre sampler ( 1 rod ea of all pastel, handpulled, specials & transparents)

Once ppl are used to the moretti palette, I suggest a CIM sampler. Getting both at the same time is just too steep a learning curve for most people. The CIM colors are often my favorites, but they were designed to fill gaps in the effetre palette so they don't always have the basic plain old colors you need to do a lot of things. If you wanted to just try a few CIM colors (other than peace and hades, which are staple colors IMHO) I'd suggest leaky pen, stone ground, canyon de chelly, cranberry, peacock green, olive, halong bay, sangre and/or thai orchid. For the most part, CIM colors are true to their rod form and very easy to work with, so if you see a color you love just get it. Since you aren't a beginner, if you like luster effects I'd suggest getting a few double helix rods, specifically ekho, clio, triton and Kalypso.

Some things to remember with effetre - Ivory and most of the red/yellow/orange opaques react with turquoises and some greens, and silver glass giving you a brown-grey line between colors. This can be very effective, or a big mess. Silver leaf on ivory is very popular for organic style beads.

Effetre black is really dark purple, and will wash out and look purple if used as stringer or over a light color.

Anice white is a PITA, make sure not to mix it up with your regular white. It can be used for some special effects, but most people don't like it.

E254 (EDP) devits like a mad thing.

Copper green and the opaque turquoises will reduce & go a sort of pewter-y grey if ot cased - nothing you can really do to fix it except etch it very lightly after annealing.

Thank you Jen for your help and for all the info. That helped me alot. I've never used 104 except for what I have bought at Hobby Lobby in small packs. Then I gave up and used BE . But with all the beautiful colors I see on everyones beads and the wonderful tuts that require 104. I want to be able to order the tuts and use 104.
Thank you Soooooo Much for all the help. I appreciate it.
I'm going to order some 104.

Janet, I would be very happy to send you some COE104 to play with--some shorts and not-so-shorts, random colors with some extra glass added to round out the palette a bit, and extra black/white/ivory/clear. It's mostly unlabeled but if you're crazy about something it's likely that we could identify it. It's already packed up, about 5#, I think, as I'm trying to clear out a little room. Enough to get some feel for whether you might like it. PM me if you're interested.

This is a highly personal question based on what you like to do with your BE. If you like and ivory and organic style beads your list will be different than if you want reactive and silver glass, or layered dots or bright happy floral. I would suggest starting off with the same type of colors you like in BE.
