Default Something other than me etched my beads!!! HELP

I have a weird problem and I hope to God someone has an answer, I have used the shelf that came with my kiln for years, but a few months ago I put it in and it made this wierd steamy smoke and all the beads came out with a frosty finish. Most of the beads washed clean, but some were permanently etched, and it keeps happening although without the steamy smoke when I use the shelf. I tried re coating it with kiln wash and it happened worse than ever - smoke and all. What is going on here? Please please if you have any ideas - I really need the space the shelf gives to get ready for a show :/

Only used for annealing beads, there doesn't appear to be anything amiss surface wise... It was fuse master kiln wash...

Hmmmm. I am stumped. I guess you could always get a new shelf, but it would be better if you could figure out what happened to the one you have.

Hello, Are you using a ceramic shelf or a shelf made from ridgid ceramic fiber board. If it is ceramic fiber board, these need to be prefired to burn out the binders. Is there an odor when the kiln is being fired? Just a thought.
