large rods of soft glass clear
Any vendors out there carry large rods of effetre clear rods 18-20mm. I like them for large soft glass marbles. Thanks for looking

the only ones I've found so far are the Lauscha reformulated clear stock - I got 5 lbs of 16mm stock from flamedame.com but she's down for the summer. Works great and helps with clarity but handles still shock off way too frequently compared with boro.

Large Clear
At Frantz Art Glass we have all sizes of the larger Effetre clear. Our next shipment will have 13-14, and 16-18mm clear, but it will not be here for 60 days.

ok i know "what is the best clear" is a loaded question, so i'll refrain from asking that, but does anyone know if the more recent batches of effetre clear are decent?

@ paula...never used lauscha. i might need to try that. if i haven't scored any by the time you are back i'll probably try a pound or so.
i forget who, but someone here swears by the effetre super clear large rods. can't seem to find them though.

If you are going to be using that much clear in a marble/paperweight IMO you are far better off with schott pucks. They are faster to melt, fairly cheap (~21$/lb) and optically flawless.
Paul stankard and chris buzzini use them, along with most other soft glass paperweight makers. This stuff stays literally 100% bubble/scum free even in massive spheres.

The purple/yellow implosions are schott and the other two implosions are rod.
There is a bit of a learning curve to the pucks, I like to cut them to size on a tile saw (generally halves, sometimes cut into 1/3 and 2/3rd pieces for smaller/larger pieces) and then heat them in a kiln. Since they are already at temperature, they melt very fast and are easy to peel should you desire it.

i actually ordered a few pucks to play around with, and i can't wait to use them! i should have thought of this sooner.
btw, do you know if i can skin them, then pull out into rod and keep in tissue paper....will i need to peel them again the next time i use them?

Even Schott will oxidize a little so some peeling will still be needed for the best end result but, Schott is imho the best soft glass available to use for projects that require the most clarity.

So far I've only used the schott clear within a day or two of pulling it and I don't bother peeling again.
The only real problems I've had are with fingerprints. I sometimes use a clean glove on one hard when using the rods, or punty on so I don't have to touch them.
Even if you don't go to ridiculous lengths to keep the rods clean, schott still does well. Its just an option if you want to ensure its perfect.

It looks like the largest rod I have right now is 10 to 12.I am going to have to take a trip tot he storage room to see what else is there. ets I know I had bigger rods when I left 6 weeks ago but someone might have bought them all!

Ok my packer upper person (BF) says that we sold out of most super fat sizes before we left to go up North but I did find one more box of fat rods. I do have some 16 to 18 in regular clear that I see on the top of the box. I will weigh out and then add to the website in the next few days. I am also putting in another order from Lauscha that will airfreight to me and I can whatever size of clear that you would like to order so please contact me via PM as to what size you want and if you want clear or soft. The sizes go all the way up to 20 to 22 mm.

I had some Schott pucks but when I moved they got buried somewhere. I'll see if I can get more. I'd use a boro punty.

i got mine at hisglassworks.com and soaked at 1025 for two hours then skinned it. well, i didn't so much skin it, as waste about 1/3rd of the puck. need to work on my peeling skills. this schott is like butter though (well any soft glass is after using boro for so long) and i think my next puck will be treated better, now i know what to expect.
use a 10-15mm boro punty.

New member here: I have a pound or 2 of clear, large schott rods purchased as a newbie lampworker. I now use only COE 104. What is the COE of Schott? I would be willing to sell the lot if it isn't 104.

there is schott 90, 106 (the 106 is the schott pucks) and probably others as well. the shcott 90 that i have is super nice to work with. it's fairly stiff and doesn't scum up easily.

I bought it because the seller said it would "probably" work with 104. ( He saw the newbie in me. ) It cracks with the 104 beads. I don't know if these are pucks or not. They are really fat rods. I guess I could make clear beads and etch them???

Contrary to common belief, the actual measured COE of Schott S-8 Art Encapsulation Glass (the official name of S-8 gobs) is 109 (at 20-300C). For reasons I won't go into, it still works okay with many "104 COE" colors.
Schott makes great glasses. S-8 is one of them. While a lot of other companies have cut corners on quality and/or sold their famous brand name to low budget manufacturers making crap (like a certain company in NY state named after a town there), Schott has maintained their high quality standards.
If you can't tell, I like their glass. It's too bad they don't make more of it for our needs. The market is just too small for it to be much of a priority for them.
