Default Cleaning clear glass rings

Hello everyone

I made some rings, using ring (big hole) mandrel. U use DH Zephyr, Effetre. The problem is that I can't achieve fully transparent appearance. No matter how carefully and gently I clean the hole, always finish with white frosted spots where was the bead release. Not so ugly in small hole transparent beads, but making ring or bih hole beads is impossible.

I did not even used my Dremel bits for cleaning, as I usually do, instead used a soft brush and watter. And nothing helps. I am very disappointed. Any ideas? Should I anneal again? Or polish the glass with something? Change bead release? Now I'm using Fusion.

Thank you so much for your help

Here are some photos, so you can see the problem.

Milica,

That is the nature of glass when you use bead release. Lots of people paint the inside with clear nail polish, and that helps a lot, but you may have to reapply it periodically.

If you have access to a graphite mandrel, the rings will be a lot clearer. There are some tips on LWE somewhere about making rings with them. I'll look around for them and will post later.

By the way, the rings are beautiful!

Cheryl

Cheri, thank you so much for posting all this useful information. Making of mandrel rings is very good option... I also think it's tricky - well, from my point of view, because I have never made anything of mandrel But, well this is a good reason to learn something new, thanks again

Hope you understand my English.

I uses my ring mandrel to shape them 'off mandrel. It was great. I took a big metal clip and clipped it to the table. The clip has holes in the handle so I just slipped the mandrel down in it. Then I could pull the glass around it without having to hold it. It was neat! I didn't make too many, not real good at the off mandrel stuff lol... But it worked and was fun! I like your style very much though... I might just make some more rings now! Beautiful!

I haven't tried it, but Devardi has some bead core dye. Wouldn't be clear, but would possibly give you an alternative.

You can use a few different sizes of grit and probably some cerium oxide to polish the inside by hand. It doesn't take long really.

Thank you so much for helping. Yesterday I try to make off-mandrel rings, and with some practice it should work It's hard to obtain uniform shape. I was thinking that maybe it is better option to 2mm sheet, cut it to desired sizes and melt it around grafite reamel.

Three Muses Glass, I purchased from UK (I live in Europe and shipping from US is to expensive) White aluminium oxide abrasive paste for the removal of scratches from glass.

Art in the Round sells (or did at one time) a drill bit that a lot of people said made the finish much more transparent. They were rather $$$. Might want to check with Dave. He sold two different size bits. Actually i bought a coup,le but haven't given either size a try! Shame on me!

Good luck

use clear nail polish. dip a small mandrel in the nail polish bottle and then wiggle it around in the reamed bead. that works wonders!
