Default Glaskolben - Frit...

Hi Everyone:

Interested in giving glaskolben a try. I have read that they are 90 COE. Most of my frit is 96. If I use the same amount I use for my 104 beads, <10%, will that work, or because they will be thin wall it has to be 90 COE frit?

Best source for kolben and 90 COE frit?

Thanks people!

I have not had a problem with the 96 frist etc with 90 coe glass. I have tried bullseye 90 frits and powders fro blown work and dont like it at all. I have a bunch if you want it.

just for info.. if you have seen Shane Ferro's birds, they are all done with 90 coe tubing and 96 powders and frit etc.

BTW I have tried the kolben per puled points and dont care for them either, the points are too short for my liking and thin. my background is in blown soft glass and I but lead glass neon sign tubing at a bit over a buck a pound. Look in your local yellow pages for a sign supply shop, or a local neon shop. For blown work I like the 10mm best for the mini ornaments using ornament caps, 15mm for smaller ornamanrts with marieas etc and 25mm and 18mm for blown balls. I also do perfume bottles, bells, vases, goblets all sorts of stuff with that glass. Its my fav glass to work with.

If you want some 90 frit, I have a variety of colors I could part with, both Bullseye and Uroborus. PM me if interested and I'll take pix and price the lot.

if you do decide you want the glasskolben, Howaco Glass carries it.

Default learning glaskolben techniques

Hi. I am new to this list and to lampworking. I took a class to learn blowing ornaments with glaskolben and I haven't found alot of info about what people's experiences have been or what all you've done with them. I am finding that the more coarse the frit the more cracking I am getting in the fiber blanket. I am limited to fiber blanket for another week when I'll be getting my kiln back.

I am also on a hothead. I am using 90 coe frit. I have tried some bullseye stringers broken up inside, I scoop my frit inside, too, and stringers on the outside and they, too seem to crack where the stringer is.

I would love to hear about people's experiences and how else to use these like what to do with the ones that come broken or shatter when you blow too hard.

Namaste

That's pretty much all I use. Has to be furnace, though, like Reichenbach or Kugler. Uroboros / System96 is not compatible, even in small quantities.

Dazzlings frits from arrow springs are furnace glass. Awesome. Going to try them since I have most of them.

I've made a lot of Glaskolben & teach classes in Alaska. I use Bullseye 90 frit & anneal in the kiln. Had lots of success & the students do too. I've recently started decorating with Bullseye stringer & twisties & no problems with cracking yet. My recommendation is to stick to the same COE or use very little of the non COE frit.
