I used the search button and four pages of threads came up. Also you can use the search button feature that searches within a forum or even within a thread.

I frequently grab a cup of coffee or tea and spend hours even days using the search and researching answers to my questions.

Here is a thread to get you started.

It's a type of glass you'll want to leave in the drawer for a while unless you're extremely patient. It's very shocky - not a good newbie glass.

Thank you for telling me..... I would have been dumb and tried it the first week! I kind of thought there was a reason there was only one drawer of it.

It tends to be shocky and needs to be worked cool. It also doesn't like to play nicely with regular glass and will often crack. You can get some nice results if you have the patience. They don't call it Alabastard for nothing. Same for goes Opalino.

Alabasters and Opalinos are one of the secret gems of lampworking. They require a different touch, so they tend to be misunderstood. However, the effects and reactions can be beyond what you have ever seen..............

The base color is Abe's Ivy with Opalino 532 stringer and opalino 520 dots.
What makes the alabasters and opalinos interesting is that the change and enhance the effects of other colors...

I LOVE the pale green opalino...forgot the name of it. I use it a lot. It turns silver foil a rust color.
The bottom one has something over it.

Thanks, I wasn't sure if Abe's Ivy was the one. Going to order.

The first time I walked into a shop and bought glass I bought a full pound of the beautiful shiz. I webbed it and scorched it and shot it all over my little studio. It wasn't until a year later that I learned how difficult and fussy it is.

Nevertheless, it is sooo pretty!

I love this stuff, too.
I hate how my impatience burns it, though.
I love how easy it is to read, when pulling stringer.
I hate how my impatience burns it, though.
I love how pretty the Alabaster and Opalino colours are.
I hate how my impatience burns it, though.
I love how my ignorance brings me luck - none of mine has been shocky enough to be a problem.
I hate how my impatience burns it, though.
I love how it webs (especially the yellow).
I hate how my impatience burns it, though.

ya think?
Tee hee

I'm not getting rid of what I do have. When I finally get set up with an oxycon and big kids' torch, I'll definitely do more with it. Every now and then I'll feel like persevering or trying something different with it. I love it with frit - the frit 'shields' the base to some extent from the worst of the heat, but the biggest challenge for me is the viscosity (or lack thereof!) and getting the base melted down first. And cooking the bejezus out of the yellow gives some lovely effects on smaller beads.
I have yet to try applying those lovely stringers, which I look forward to doing when I get better at drawing.

Oh she couldn't be more right about protecting the bazooooms. Alabaster is best used on a cold day when you have a long sleeved turtleneck on. Ay dios!
With that said, I do love the look of it in a finished bead.

I find that alabasto is much easier to boil than opalino. It's also more shocky, IMO. I love the opalinos, and the carnelian does really cool effects with a stringer pulled from Iris gold frit on straw yellow.

Opalinos are beautiful and easy to work with.

Not so for Alabasters, I can't get past the bubble scum and don't find them worth the trouble.

What is the difference between alabaster and opalino glass? I have both but I don't know what makes one opalino and one alabaster. It is my favorite glass to look at in rod form. The periwinkle makes my heart sing! Ditto the sea foam green.

Ooh! That explains why I'm having so much trouble with a couple of the colors of glass I'm playing with - I've been buying assortments from eBay, not having a clue what I'm doing, and when I just went and looked at the particular colors I'm struggling with, it turns out they're alabaster! I CAN get them to melt, but they definitely don't play well with others!

(Unlike the Anise White Pastel, which so far I've been unable to make anything but a mess with... )

I've came back to look at Rocio's alabasters a few times. I may give it a go later this afternoon.
