Default triton turned black

Please help, I just tried triton yesterday and it turned black. Did I reduce to much? Please any tips or info about this color would be appreciated. And while I am at it, I cann't get much out of psyche either. Is my prob too much propane on both. thanks all

Sometimes Triton will "come back" if you put it in an oxidizing flame. Sometimes heavy reducing can turn things black but oxidizing them right afterward can bring them back.

Psyche does not like me so I can offer nothing in regard to that glass. It just stays purple for me, no colours otherwise.

Can you telll us what color you had put it on? Triton is a dark glass to begin with, so maybe it just wasn't reduced and you were seeing the basic glass. It's really hard to answer your question without a few more details.

Both Triton and Psyche should amaze you with shiny, mirror, oil slick wonderfulness....So I think Angie may be right.

What torch are you using? Are you getting too close to the cones? Try just turning your oxy down (instead of blasting your propane), and reducing fairly far out in the flame. Be gentle, you can see all kinds of cool things happen with both of these glasses.

I used just transperent with the triton bc I was trying it out and wanted to be able to see the colors. I use a bobcat torch and about mid flame but I did not try to oxidize at the end. Is there a point when you reduced to much? How many waves in the reducing flame do you see colors and oil slickish? thanks

I've never paid attention to how long it's taken to reduce triton, for me it happens almost instantly. Sometimes I'll oxidize to 'un-reduce' and then reduce again, but it always reduces super-fast. Like in two seconds.

Here is a step-by-step tutorial with pics my sister and I did, perhaps it may help? It shows the reduction flame and the position of the bead in the flame. Also, make sure that you let the bead cool until the glow is gone before re-introducing it in the reduction flame. Both Triton and Psyche reduces quickly - doing multiple passes with less reduction is better than one long reducing in heavy reduction.

Hope this helps.

Thank you...that is a wonderful tut. I got some silvery-blue colors and golds. I just didnt want to put too much prop. Would I have gotten more colors if I had stuck it in there again? Also, which DH colors do you really heat up with prop...kinda of opposite of the triton method. Thanks .

Triton is my favorite DH glass. I have others but they don't do much for me. Triton is VERY easy to get the colors too!

Now try encasing the reduced Triton. It's the only one that can handle the head of encasement. Try it on black, reduce it and encase it. You will get the most wonderful blues or turquoise depending on how much reduction.

Psyche should be the same as Triton except that it is more susceptible to the heat applied after encasement. As for reducing it, pretty much the same as Triton only more purply metallic shades.

It is very nice encased! I use it that way alot! Keep it cool though or you will loose your reduction. Just work it slower and you should be fine. Here is a bead I did recently with triton and nyx. The encasement is very thin.

Try Psyche stringer melted in on Opal Yellow and reduce lightly. You'll get amazing color.
