How do you physically tell the difference between Boro from Soft Glass?
Hi there!
I bought a bunch of glass "shorts" and broken pieces with the plan to make frit, stringers, fuse some of the larger matching pieces back together again BUT I want to make sure that I'm not accidentally mixing any Boro with the Soft glass.
The colored pieces aren't a problem but is there a way to spot the difference on the clear rods?

I think you should be able to tell how it melts.

I would not take a chance unless you know that it is the only glass in the studio. Soft glass can be 104,96,and 90. Are you sure that it is just 104 soft glass?
Boro will melt much slower then the soft glass...

A quick way is to melt a known glass and the unknown together and then pull a stringer. If it stays straight as it cools the COE's are the same.

I'm just concerned about any damage I can cause with either myself or the torch if I run across any Boro clear...
I'm not going to use any pieces that are not what I'd describe as "standard" size like my other soft glass rods, since I've seen that clear Boro comes in all diameter, so that should help narrow it down.
I've never worked with Boro, so I'm not familiar with what to expect under a neutral flame.

It won't harm you our your torch. Just that when it gets that bright orange color that causes 104 to fall to the bench , boro says " Hot enough for you?".

Um yeah, you'll know when you can go off and make lunch while you're waiting for it to melt
In saying that, boro feels sort of plastic to me, it doesn't have the same kind of tink sound when you tap them together

Boro also has more flare, you could probably tell just from the torch flame.

Generally boro can be placed directly into the flame (no pre heating) without shattering for the most part. Not so much with soft.

I tried to melt a rod of 96 to a short of boro (I forgot I bought some shorts & when they came I was wondering what the heck they were & was experimenting) and it was not happening. The 96 was getting all melty and the boro got kind of hot but when I pulled it out of the flame it was going stiff really fast.

My box of boro shorts got 100% labelled (just with a different-coloured label that said "boro" because i had no idea what colours they were) before they entered the studio. Seemed excessive at the time but this thread makes me happy that I'm so anal. Good luck!
I did seem to notice that they feel somehow lighter or different to me than 104. Maybe Deb's "plastic" term is close for me.

You mean the sound of glass cracking and exploding everywhere for no reason?

Thanks for the advice and tips! I'm going to start weeding through what I have of pieces tonight...I've got a good quart of them...I can compare and do that "tink" test to see if I can tell a difference.
I did call the store to ask if they mixed the glass. They said they "shouldn't" have...but when you have ends in the box with tags from your competitor...I think its been building up for a while now.
It's about 17 pounds worth! I just need to find an inexpensive rod holder!

Once you know the COE, weld them on to clear. It's good practice.
