my summertime outdoor glassblowing studio
my main glassblowing studio is inside my home. i have both an offhand and a lampwork studio. during the summer i can still use my lampwork studio because it does not generate much heat, but i cannot fire up my offhand glassblowing studio because it generates way too much heat. so i build an outdoor studio that i use in the summer. i had to do some remodeling outside this summer because my old shed died, and i needed a new one. so while i was building my new shed, i made a new area for my outdoor glassblowing studio. i made a small gloryhole out of a 10 gallon steel garbage can, and i made a small crucible that sits inside the gloryhole for melting glass. it is made from mizzou and can hood about 10 pounds of glass. currently, i am melting ruby red cullet in it so everything i am making right now is red. i add highlight colors by preheating strips of glass on a heated marver made using a camping stove. the gloryhole burner was made from steel plumbing parts and stuff i salvaged from an outdoor turkey cooker. my work area is a 6 foot table covered with cement wall board. my bench is made using steel plumbing fixtures. here are some photos.

Yowzers! I wish you lived next door to me. You'd never get rid of me! Any chance you'll move to Maine?
I'm amazed by how close the plant pots are. What a great way to show how well you've contained the heat. Not to mention that the plants are pretty, too!
Glad you shared.

actually those potted plants are my son's. he is a chef and wants a supply of fresh herbs. each pot contains a different herb like sage, chives, dill.... i will post some photos of my wifes guarden that surrounds my studio.

Mark, it looks fantastic! By the way, thanks for your tutorial over on the other site for building a kiln controller - DH is in the process of building mine and is using your instructions. Your help is much appreciated!

thank you all for your comments. i mentioned earlier that my outdoor studio is in my wifes garden so i am posting some photos of her garden that surrounds my outdoor studio. i make a lot of colorful garden balls that you will see peppered around her garden. these balls stay outside 24/7 all year. during the winter they are the only color we see outside.

besides the garden balls, i have also been making glass fish, starfish, eggs, and pulling red cane to use in my inside studio. the ruby red glass i am melting has the most beautiful blood red color.

Oh Man! That is one beautiful garden. I so love the Ruby Red colors and look at those star-fish.
Your set-up is over my head but it sure looks fun! And what a wonderful workshop. It fits perfectly with the gardens. Looks like something you would see in a magazine, or on a garden home tour.

Really cool Mark! I started glassblowing in June - now the class is over and I am suffering from withdrawal. This set up looks reasonably affordable for a newly addicted glassblower. Thanks for showing it!

Very innovative Mark,I've memorized your pictures and ideas and put it all on my wish-list for down-the-road. There's a real advantage to having Male Genes. We think" How can I make that "as opposed to "Where can I buy that".
Now put some Christmas lights in your garden ornaments and plug them in during those gloomy winterdays, whooeee! TIM

You are truly amazing. To have half of your intelligence and talent.
Your wife is also an incredible gardener. I would like to have a green thumb, too.
Not going to happen. Live in the High Desert in California. Too much water. We have lots of brown and ugly greens.
C'est la vie.
Way cool. I bet your mind is always spinning.
Enjoy.

i took photos while i was building the gloryhole. i have posted these photos along with lots of other stuff at yahoo groups glassblowing_topics. look in the files area. there is a zip file in the files root directory.
its real easy and cheap to build a system like i made. BUT THIS CAN ONLY BE USED OUTSIDE. if you want a inside gloryhole, you will need to get a better burner with safety systems.
