Best Bead AND marble making torch
Hi everyone,
Could you please recommend the best torch for making beads AND marbles?
Thanks,
Christine from Chatham, Illinois (the only state in the Union that has incarcerated 3, count 'em, 3, of its Governors for political corruption).

LOL! Love the signature, Christine. Welcome to LE!
If you're using an oxygen concentrator, the GTT torches are made to work well with that fuel source and the guys there are great. Here's their website, so you can do some reading on the ability of the torches. http://glasstorchtech.com/ If you read the descriptions on the standard torches, for instance, they say how big a gather of glass the torch can manage.

The answer to this is going to be based on multiple factors. I don't have the answer for you, but here are some things that people who CAN help you will want to know:
- What is your budget?
- Will you be on an Oxycon or Tanked oxygen? If Oxycon, how many and what size?
- How large do you want the marbles to be?
- What glass will you be working with? Boro, "Soft", or both?
- How much experience do you have with Lampworking? ( may influence the brand of torch )
I'm sure the smart folks can come up with more things.

I'm a couple hours north of you! Many moons ago I did an internship in Springfield. Welcome to the love of melting glass!
Many torches are great for both beads and marbles. So much depends on how you plan to set up your workspace. Do you want to run propane, or hard line into your home's natural gas? Do you want to run tanked oxy, or concentrators? Do you want to do both boro and soft glass? How large would you like your work to be? There are many different setups, so it isn't a definitive answer. Don't be afraid to give us additional information about what you want to do. We also understand if you aren't certain about the answers to these questions, but it helps us make recommendations.

Sorry so late in responding. We will use propane and an oxy/con or generator. Yes to working with soft AND hard glass. Large marbles are probably as big as we'll go (unless we get inspired by a Chihuly exhibit and want to try sculpture). Any recommendations on that torch?

What do you mean by large in inches/mm?
I made a 36mm boro marble on an Alpha at a class. We were on tanked or liquid oxygen though.
I am going to try it on a mega minor with oxycon, but haven't gotten around to it yet.

I would go with a torch that has both an inner fire and outer fire. I currently run a GTT Scorpion. The inner fire is the same as a Cricket. When I work large soft, boro, or just need a lot of radiant heat, I add the outer. A Barracuda would be a good choice too, but for me, the Scorpion was designed to fun efficiently even on household natural gas (which I use). It would run hotter on propane, but for many reasons I prefer to use NG.
Over the years, I've ran a Lynx, Betta, Mini CC and Scorpion. The Scorpion is by far my favorite for my needs.
Have fun deciding! All will have a learning curve.
