Electric Mandrel Spinner - anyone have one?
I have been diagnosed with a form of arthritis in my thumb joint, and I'm finding that when I spin the mandrel it just stutters. So far I don't have any pain (well, not too much) just a "stuttery" spin. I have been thinking of investing in one of Scott Bouwens' Electric Mandrel Spinners - does anyone have one, and what do you think of it?
Thanks!

I have one and like it. I've had it for a while and although I don't use it all the time, it seemed to help me perfect my long and skinny beads. Since it smoothly turns the mandrel, it let me concentrate on shaping the bead. It's well made and I know I've read other positive posts from folks who have dexterity problems and they say this has really helped.

I was having thumb pain, and got one of these - no more pain. It's my favorite tool. If it broke today, I would definitely get another one. Increases speed of production, and makes initial shaping simpler.

Mine should arrive any day now! I can't wait to try it out! I got it because of carpal tunnel problems.

This is the best thing I've ever bought!! I had a lot of pain in my hands which has been pretty much eliminated after starting to use my spinner. It also improved my shaping enormously as well as speeding up many aspects of basic beadmaking and allowing me to concentrate on details and decoration. I use it for every bead and would not want to make beads without it. Also you will be hardpressed to find better customer service! Scott and Monica are the best!!

What else...
...do you use yours for???? I bought it a couple months ago, made some twisties (which I don't use much anyway), but now wondering what my thought process was when I made the decision to get it! It works great but what should I be using it for???? Any advice welcomed...
Thanks,
Lea

Thanks for all your input - I think I am going to need one for sure. I thought it was just too much coffee at first, but the "stutter" is soooo pronounced that it sends the liquid glass all over the place on the mandrel, and I end up with some real wonky beads. It isn't too bad when I am doing large pressed focals because I am spending a lot of time marvering the glass before I press it, but to do regular round beads is just a "royal pain" in the you-know-where! Thanks again everyone who responded.

Electrical Mandrel Spinner!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hello, I bought mine in July and what a wonderful tool I don't know how I ever made beads without one! Scott and Monica are wonderful people! Mine paid for itself right away with my first trade show after I bought it! It tripples your bead production which is what I needed! I make beads to sell I make jewelry with my beads plus I make other native crafts that I use my beads on plus I have my ebay store! So, I need alot of beads quickly sometimes and this is the tool! I never had any pain so that is not why I bought one I wanted to speed up production which it did! My other suggestion is to get a creation station to use with it like I did what a wonderful combination! I hope you enjoy yours like I do! Jacque Duxbury Red Bear Mountain

I've had mine for two years and I use it for all sizes of beads. It makes small ones a snap. I use it for big beads until I get to the final shaping - the weight can throw things off a bit. Long, thin beads and bicones are easy.
It takes some getting used to, but it's my favorite tool and no more thumb pain! And once you get used to it, you never want to rotate a mandrel again. You get nice even heat. You get synched with the tool and know just when to stop it. It's really a great tool.

I love, love, love my spinner. Their brass barrel marver is also a winner.

Absolutely the best tool ever made and that I ever bought. I use it for every bead I make. 100 stars from me.

I will add my recommondation to everyone else. I love mine to bits best money spend in lampworking thus far. I use it every time I make beads on every bead. If I am doing sculptured things I might stop and take the mandrel out and put it back in a number of times. It helps round up your beads and it gives you some thinking time just holding it in the back flame while you think what comes next. I have turned into a spacer making machine making up to 500 spacers at a hit 6 at a time on a mandrel. Buy it you wont regret it. It does take a bit of getting used to but I was confident with mine within a week of getting it. I also got the arm rest and find the left 1 great as you can just put your wrist on it and spin away. I make some huge woppers and holding up that amount of glass can get very heavy.

How does it work for boro beads? I can see soft glass working easy since it just pours off the rod but am wondering about slower melting boro.

Wow, what a lot of great recommendations here. My only concern is that it doesn't take a 5/64 mandrel, and that is the size I use for larger focals, instead of the 3/32. However, most of the problem is the pain/stutter I get from making plain round beads (on 1/16 mandrel) - and I love the look of round decorated beads - so it looks like I will be ordering one pretty soon. I better do it soon before the Canadian dollar goes down again!

If you check with Scott and Monica, I've heard that they can do custom sizes for the sleeves.
