Exploding rods from afar...
Howdy folks,
I was playing with some El-Cheapo brand glass from a country known
for spicy curry dishes and while working on a bead I start hearing:
*Tink*
*Tink*
Coming from the rod warmer, then:
*Pow*
A couple small pieces fly across the room.
So, I pull out the rods in question and had a closer look.
Take note of the bubble movement between the green marks.
It appears they have some liquid trapped in them.
Alas, the old maxim of getting what you pay for is always correct...

Does that rod have a hollow hole going through it?

Yes, a very small hollow runs through the rod and has some liquid trapped in it.
As the rods warm up the liquid expands and *Pow* they pretend they are
popcorn.

Yup, gotta watch for those holes. You can get them on the hand pulled colors (ie expensive) from Effetre too, so annoying, try preheating in the kiln to get the rods extra hot and heat from the edge in. I find it helps for me.

I've never had any rods spit at me while being warmed, that's kind of freaky!

Wow, that's trippy! Doesn't sound like fun at all either.

Ok, a tiny hole pulled into a hand pulled rod I can understand, but that hole is huge!

It looks huge.
It's approximately .5mm, a needle point will fit into it.
On reflection I'm guessing the water got trapped in them
when I pickled.
Have to check the remaining rods to see if they need
a little low temp oven time to get rid of any more water.

That's still a huge hole, I've had shocky rods and the hole has only been like a hair thickness
