Rec. a vent hood?
I know this is an old subject, but I am looking for any current rec's for a vent hood, is the best way to go Glasscraft, its a 650cm, $325.00, I was hoping to get a good one for less, does anyone have this hood and just love it, or hate it??? Thanks for any help in advance! Carolyn

Hi Carolyn,
I have a glasscraft hood.. I don't have a handy hubby, so this was the easiest option. It is quite large but so easy to put together and install. I think that they have an option for two fans or something like that which I would recommend. I only purchased the one fan style and I don't think it moves enough air. A lot of people have purchased a squirrel fan that men use for job sites and think it works good for them. Also I believe there is (don't quote me on this) something called an inline fan that is purchased from ebay that is also used in conjunction with a hood..
Anyway, hope that helps. I love the glasscraft hood but it definitely was a little pricy for what I think is minimal supplies (probably paying for the labor to produce it)..

Megan, thanks! I was thinking the same thing as far as glasscrafts price, seems steep for what you get. I'm talking with Mike from the forum too about a blower from grainger, more economical but still need a hood and all the fixin's to go with it...my DH is 'nt handy either but my neighbor installs air/heating and Dh's best friend used to own an air and heating company, so I'm thinking a case of beer and some pizza could get them over here to install it for me!

Can I hijack your thread and ask for some basic information on hoods and fans... what definately won't work?
if I were to build one myself how might I go about it?
where one should look for these things already made?
thanks!

Well, I lucked out. I found a Nutone range hood on eBay. It's an old one (probably a late 90's model) but it was still in the box. Rated at 450CFM. It has a small squirrel cage fan in it. I got it for $20 plus postage. Nobody else bid on it. That fan is going to go in the shed at camp next summer (once the shed is built).
For my home studio/work area, hubby found a VERY LARGE squirrel cage fan at the pawn shop - $20. I don't know what it's rated at, but it's probably 4 times the size of the one in the range hood that's rated at 450CFM. He went to the local steel shop with the fan, explained what he wanted, and they're building a hood to fit it for $54.
Currently I work outside while I await the completion of the inside area. Work is progressing. The gas line will be pulled this weekend I'm hoping. At least that's the plan at the moment.

Barbara, if you check back on this thread, could you please post a picture!?!
I'd love to have something I could show my husband...or the local steel shop in our town.
With appreciation,
Michelle

Here's my setup.... the hood is hung from a set of bars on rollers. When I'm ready to work I open the top of the window and slide it into the window. When I'm done, I just slide it back out again and close the window.

Great pictures Barbara. Which makes me think. Anyone have pictures of their hood that resembles Glasscrafts?
I looked into having something built locally that would just hang from the ceiling and was told they couldn't possibly make one for less than $300 without the mechanics. I'm hoping we didn't communciate since there is a local place just a mile from here and I'd like to support the local workers.

Here's a pic of my inline fan set up. I find this works just great. I've put black fireproof paint of the sheet metal base and have a cookie sheet just infrount of the fan for catching and quick clean up. Hope this works. I thought I did this but it did not show up so this is my 2nd attempt to add a pic.... here goes..

I just moved and wanted to do things right in my new studio. I ended up with the glasscraft fan and had a handyman install it ($400) and it was way cheaper than having a contractor make and design one and install it himself ($1700!!!!) It's super quiet and seems to work just fine. I did cheaper the first couple of times and it was much louder and didn't work as well.

I've never been opposed to the Glasscraft one, I'd just prefer not use the resources to ship it here. That's why I keep wondering what else people do.
Thanks everyone for your input. I didn't mean to hijack.
