OK, I just got a 25# propylene tank for my hot head. I have a connector hose from a glass supply company for this purpose that is only about 5 ft. long. I have taken your warnings and advice here to heart and will not be putting it in my basement, as I had planed. My questions are, does the cold temps (0-10) have any effects on its functioning? Second, can my cylinder (it is a torpedo shape) be used on its side? I think this is the only way my hose will fit. If not where can I get a longer hose?
Fuel gas tanks must absolutely stand straight up on the base attached to the tank. Putting them on their sides will allow liquid fuel to enter the hose and you will end up with a huge fireball coming out of your torch. DO NOT PUT FUEL TANKS ON THEIR SIDES!!!!
Cold temperatures will definately affect the performance of hot head torches. The torch is designed to operate at tank pressures of 100 to 125 PSI, cold weather can drop the pressure to 30 pounds and you won't be happy with torch performance at that pressure.
I got my 12 foot hose ( with all the fittings ) at my local hardware store _ I brought my torch with me to be sure I got the correct fitting. The 12 foot is long enough to reach from outside with out beiong too gangely, and is easy to hang to drain ( though nothing has ever come out of my hose !)
