Build your own Holding Tank
After quite a few questions I put together a little tutorial on how to build an inexpensive holding tank to boost torch and concentrator performance.
Its my first tutorial and all constructive critisim is welcome
PM with any questions.
Peace,
Trey

Looks like a very good system.

Really cool idea. You need a piece of 1/4" tubing also right to connect the holding tank to the torch?

Unless you have a very short line you should be able to just splice it in.

Great tutorial Trey! I'm using 2 5 lpm units with a mini CC right now, and am running the O2 wide open. I was thinking of getting a 3rd concentrator, but I wonder if this would give me the extra that I need? I know you claim not to be an expert , but any idea if it would work for me?

I would give it a try. Make sure you let the concentrators run a few minutes to build volume. If you are running wide open all the time you will probably not build up large reserves of 02 and therefornot likely to see a huge difference. However if you are like me and working with a smaller flame to do detail work and then raging the torch to melt it in or keep it warm you should see some significant improvement. Remember, there is no magic here. the tank is not creating more 02. It is simply allowing you to store surplus for later usage.

Thank You!! Looks easy to follow and pretty detailed to me. Nice pics too.
Thanks for taking the time to do this. I've been thinking about it for awhile

Nicely done explanation. The only comment I have is that oxygen and petroleum products do not play well together. While this _may_ be of concern only with high O2 pressures, there is a serious reason (Boom!) for the "use no oil" printed on every tank O2 regulator. Do not be tempted to lubricate any connection in this system!

Hey Trey, or whoever. What would happen if you hooked the output of the concentrator up to the input of an air compresser? Must not work or everyone would do it, but why wouldn't it work? Maybe the compressor sucks in air way faster than the concentrator can produce it???
Just curious.

"Maybe the compressor sucks in air way faster than the concentrator can produce it???" Yes, also see my post above about the dangers of oxy + oil.

I am not sure where oxygen and petroleum products being mixed is mentioned in the turorial but thank you for the reminder.
Pressures in this system will not exceed those of the concentrator and are generally lower than 20psi. Usually much lower.

HOLY COW!!! WOW!
OK folks I just tried this. I had the air tank in my garage and it cost me $10 in parts.
Hooked it up to my 2 concentrators to power my midrange more effectively.
What a difference!
Thank you Trey!! If you live near West Palm Beach I'll buy you a beer when I visit down there.

Would doing this help when you have 2 concentrators with different pressures so they will not over do the higher one? Would it balance and make them the same if it is going into the tank first?

Hey you sole my idea!!!! I did this last year with I think a 10 lb craftsman one from sears. The only thing different is I have 2 concentrators attatched. I had a second conector added (welding shop is your friend) the first is the input (with the two hoses from the concentrators)the second is the output. Super cheep and works great. Thanks for sharing!
Oh I did want to say good job on mentioning the back pressure issue. It is a very important thing to remember, and the beds will be damaged if you don't leave the torch cracked to releave that.
Bead crazy mentioned she had two concentrators. I have found with mine I make sure they are running at just under full speed and at the same pressures. I have tried many settings over the last year and that is how they work together best.
Thanks Trey

Hey that does look good.

If its a reguler air compresser its not something you want to do. As it compresses in the cylinder it can explode and bend the connecting rods and trash the head.
It has to be an oiless type compresser. To do that.

Works all the time at places that fill o2 tanks.
But why wouldn't it work? I never seen any thing saying it can't and don't work all the time every day somewere. But the mear fact that there are dozzones of Co. that make all kind of compressers for compressing O2 at all sorts of difrent rates. tells me Its 100% doable.
Maybe the compressor sucks in air way faster than the concentrator can produce it???
Just curious.[/quote]
When that happens it just causes the gen to instead of being a pressure swing asorbshin PSA type set up it becomes a Vacumme swing asorbshion type generater. Then it increases its output. Becasue its easier to push threw to a vaccume then it is to push agains the pressure in the secondary side of the gen.
The real problems are if you want to go high pressure. O2 has to be pumped up to pressure slowly or it heats up and can cause the tank to expolde if filling high pressure like 2,200psi. Then there is just the danger of having a tank thats being filled and emptied and refilled over and over. So you'r tanks have to be hydrostadicy tested every so ofton to make sure they are still good.
But there are a few brands of compressers used for medical use that recompress o2 from an o2 genarator up to 125 psi some only do 80 psi.
But they are out there. The one I have will only boost it to 80psi. But that is a lot higher then 9 psi.
I have been wanting to make a holding tank and recompresser product for a few years now.. But never got around to putting the finishing touches on it. I never realy figured there would ever be a market for it. Esp sence its already taking a long long time for peep to beleve you can actully even make your own o2 in the first place. LOL LOL
The bead world knows it can be done. But larger stuff and the world of boro. i'd have an easer time tring to tell make them to belive in the tooth fairy or the easter bunny. For the last 9 years
I have been told I must run a small torch.
Nope We run a delta and a red max off of our o2 set up.
Oh well we must not work big then. nope I have worked 4 inch heavy wall pyrex tube. Making big vases on the lathe 7 inches wide and 16 inches tall no problem.
Oh then it must cost so much to run that its more expensive then tanked. Nope its about $1 per K tank, or about $25 for a liquids worth of o2.
So I think the o2 pimp has done a good job at getting every on to think air only comes from welding stores. Thats why they keep the o2 and N2 gens way way in the back. The last thing they want any one to see.

That is an excellent tutorial, Trey!
I really want a Barracuda but I need to buy a natural gas booster - this will save me some dollars on the oxygen side! Wonderful

Trey, thanks for the explicit tutorial. I printed it out, took it to Walmart and the farm store, followed your instructions and ta da, my holding tank is installed. I run a Betta on NG with one oxycon. I've only had the time to melt two small boro beads to check the installation, but boy did it seem faster. My flame definately had more power! Thanks bunches!!

thanks and a quick question
Trey,
Many thanks for the tut. I printed it out and my DH went to walmart and bought all the supplies we didnt already have at home. We had it up and running within 30 minutes!
You did a wonderful job on the tutorial!
Quick question:
I want to have two oxycons going to the tank. You mentioned that the backflow of air to the oxycons is unwanted. I work with soft and hard glass. With soft glass I only use one oxy. Will a check valve put in the line work to prevent backflow to the oxy that is off?
Here is what I mean:
check valves on ebay
Or is this not even a concern? For now I have only one oxy inline and working soft glass.
Again, what an awesome tutorial and thanks for any help!

Thanks for the great tut! So easy to understand. I am sure I can do it without DH's help which would be a nice change for him. The only thing I didn't understand was fyrsmith's comment about O2 and petroleum. I know they don't mix but is there anything in this set-up that would cause them to mix? I don't want to go boom!
Peace,
Grady

Grady, when I put mine together (followed Trey's instructions exactly) there was no problem. No petroleum products are involved and the tank and supplies are already intended for compressed O2. If I understood correctly, I think fyrsmith was just warning people to not lubricate any connection. I had never heard this before, so although I wouldn't have lubricated (because it wasn't in the directions) I was glad to find out for general safety knowledge.
I'm really glad I installed the tank. It definately gives my system a boost! Trey, you rock!
