Straight line Tutorial?
I'm hoping someone can help me! I love the graphic linear designs of Anastasia, Dora Schubert, and Melanie Mortel and would love to incorporate some of those elements in my beads. But no matter how much I try, I can't seem to get a crisp straight line. Any suggestions would be much appreciated!

Hi Lisa,
Try turning down your flame, both oxygen and propane and let the flame 'chase' the stringer. I don't heat the stringer but the bead. The heat radiating from the bead is sufficient to adhere the stringer to the bead.
Hope this helps and of course lots of practice and patience!

Oh Dora, that is an excellent suggestion. I am going to try that myself.
Lisa, thanks for asking the question. I was curious myself.

Just giving more props, here!!! JCHerrell, as well as all the others mentioned, does an absolutely beautiful job with "lines"..(I'm green with envy)! Poor, 'lil 'ol Hot Header, here!!! Keep the suggestions coming, please!!! Since us on HHs can't do much in the "turn down" department, is there a "sweet spot" that can be found on a Hot Head - me wonders? I'll have to try it!!! Also, from the look of the work of these fab artists, I suspect that hand-made, extra fine stringers are in order - yea?

Oh yes! I love JC's beads too. they're gorgeous with the combination of enamel background and graphic design.
Wish I could help with the hothead sweet spot - I haven't worked on one in quite a while and back then doing anything with stringer was beyond my capabilities!
It looks like we're neighbors - in a So. Cal. way. I'm out in Redlands, only about a 45 minute drive from Arcadia now that the 210s finally been connected! My husband used to live in Sierra Madre when he was a kid so we walk around the old neighborhood every once in a while.

I have been monogramming my beads and find it a whole lot easier when I use a harder glass. For instance, I will encase most with a transparent and then pull a stringer. A lot of work, but worth it.
Also, if after you apply the stringer and it is not exactly straight and it is still raised, heat again and push with straight edge of razor tool.
MM, and JC Herrell's stringer work is a lot thinner than mine, so this could be adapted to their styles until you gain more control.
