Post Can anyone recommend how to start a web site?

I want to create a website but haven't a clue where to start. I have seen so many beautiful websites. What's the cost? What do I need to know? Who do you recommend?

Thanks!

I went to Pappashop and has one of the designers there do it for me. It cost around $500 as I remember. They also have websites there that you can get for free if you like them.

It's a good place to start looking at least. I wouldn't have a clue where to start otherwise.

I just finished making my own. I signed up with yahoo and downloaded their software called sitebuilder. Very simple to use. Save your money and do it yourself.

I also used yahoo sitebuilder, it's very easy and publishing the site costs about $14.00 a month.
killerbeads, }Patsy?) your website is very sleek and elegant! I think I need to re-do mine!

Number of ways you can do it
first get a provider - some have web software to design with or they can help you design etc.... I am with web.com as you create a page - I would suggest get a single index page up there and then work on getting other pages attached.

I typically always do my own site but you can also get downloadable templates and learn (while banging head on table ) to do it yourself then your in controll and can change whenever you want - if you have it made you can also learn to manipulate your pages for daily/weekly changes to your site

I use the new MS web expressions it replace front page - nice to work with

First you wat to think abut your web name
a lot of ISPs that host will also sell you a name

e.g. - I am with web.com but I bought my names through Register.com
once you have a name and depending upon where you bought it - it has to be hosted - there are a lot of choices out there . once decided they must host your name and the DNS must be assigned to them - they give you instructions on how to do this - it can be instantanious (because you bought through the host) or a few days.

now you have that you need a web site or at least a single page with your information on till you get set up

I am using the new webexpressions - easy to use (I do use html) but you dont have to use html - its much like word - pasting and typeing

the best thing is there are templates out there that you can buy or get for free
can range from free to hundreds of dollars

I would download the trial versionof the MS webexpressions and give it a try - it lets you use it 25 times before expiring and requiring purchase
(I purchased for approx 150.00 the legitimate software)

create a single page to start and learn how to link (easy as clicking a button)

most templates come with instructions on how to modify to your usage

making a web can be fun (but it can also be frustrating) dont take too long to get that first page up - you can modify and add to your hearts desire once you get that up and running.

that said --I am currently revamping mine which I do about every year !
